W. von Moltke: "Govert Flinck", Amsterdam 1965, p.136; No.343a-c, two ill.. Expert's Report: letter from Jan Kosten, RKD,4. November 1999. Govaert Flinck was a renowned Amsterdam portrait painter, who painted historical, biblical, and allegorical scenes. Originally a student of Lambert Jacob, he became one of Rembrandt's best students in the period of 1632 to 1635, and especially in his treatment of biblical subjects, there is evidence of a strong Rembrandt influence in his early work. His portrait on the other hand, which include many Dutch burgers, recall the work of Bartholomäus van der Helst. He also worked for Prince Elector Friedrich Wilhelm von Brandenburg, Prince Johan-Mauritz of Nassau, and the Duke of Cleve.
