Gough Engraved Springfield Sporter, by Sedgley, Phila., #874, .30-06 cal., 24'' barrel, receiver and first 1/3 of barrel profusely engraved in Gough style, as is triggerguard, floorplate, pistol grip, and muzzle portion of barrel (Both Gough and Sedgley were located in Phila.) Machine-turned bolt and extractor, fancy checkered cheekpiece walnut stock with horn forend tip, finely hand-checkered and engraved butt trap opens to provide spots for two additional cartridges and cleaning equipment; gold ovoid plaque is inscribed in Art Deco style ''VLS''. Lyman rear sight, Sedgley steep ramp front sight with hood. Condition is excellent retaining approx. 97%+ original blue with minor discoloration to checkered buttplate. Stock shows very light general impressions and small shallow scratches to both sides near balance point. Action is crisp, bore is bright. Sedgley advertisements from this period list these rifles at about $100 - an expensive purchase in the middle of the Depression. Est.: $6,000-$8,000. (C&R)
