Gouge, Wm. M. A SHORT HISTORY OF PAPER MONEY AND BANKING IN THE UNITED STATES, FROM 1690 TO 1832... Philadelphia: J. Van Court, Printer, Quarry St., Between Second and Third, 1842. As published in the Journal of Banking. 8vo, contemporary marbled boards reinforced at spine and corners with later dark tape. Title leaf; index leaf; 412 pages. Front hinge reinforced at title; some light chips to opening leaves. Very good. A complete set of this rare and important publication, which publishes Gouge’s classic work on American paper currency serially as part of the Journal of Banking. Gouge wrote his Short History of Paper Money in 1831 and 1832, and originally published it in 1833. Written largely from a financial perspective, Gouge’s work includes the first review of what Eric Newman referred to as “the eighteenth century American paper money experience.” The work is also of numismatic value because of the detailed description it gives of the organization of state banks. American Imprints 2727 (for 1842). Lomazow 405. Sabin 28073. Clain-Stefanelli 13482 and McKerchar 2075, both citing an 1840 edition.
