American -

Henry Gorski's sports images have the graceful quality of a slow-motion replay He somehow refines the violence, brutality and latent sensuality of the American sportscene into a bloodless stop-frame ballet.
Gorski has seized upon the bone-shattering potential energy of hulking athletes falling, charging, leaping or defending and has uncovered a genuinely powerful beauty.
His expert handling of paint and use of closely related tones and colors help generate the balance and gracefulness of his vision.
An examination of his canvasses shows that they are constructed in a formalist, almost neo-classical mode. The eye is led graciously from one area to the next and one's sensibility is never jarred or offended. Mr. Gorski is absorbed with the resolution of problems which date from the 15th century when Tintoretto obsessively strove to render motion on canvas. Like a Tintoretto or a Poussin or any of the classic artists, Mr. Gorski never uses a line, shape or color arbitrarily Each element has a very particular function in the creation of a well-balanced work.
The public has few opportunities to appreciate the complexity and grace which are part of the rough and tumble of sports play We are fortunate in that Mr. Gorski has rendered for us what the human eye cannot perceive.
