<td width="100%">
Bronze page turner by Gorham. This bronze page turner has quite an interesting history. It was made by the Gorham company and has their name stamped on one side of the handle edge and their bronze mark with Q 193 on the other side. On the blade it is engraved with "Compliments of Joseph J. Little June 5th 1841-1911". Joseph J. Little was born on June 5th 1841 in England so this would have been engraved when he was 70 years old. He passed away on February 11, 1913, just two years after the page turner was engraved. Joseph J. Little in 1867 established the a printing business in New York City named J.J. Little Printing. He was also a Congressman from November 3, 1891 to March 3, 1893 replacing the vacancy caused by the resignation of Roswell P. Flower. He also served in the Civil War and first as a corporal and then progress to the rank of first lieutenant. He severed as Commissioner of Education and President of the Board of Education of New York City for many years and was involved with many charitable committees. Now to the mystery, why was this engraved with a date two years before he died? It must have been given to someone as a gift and was probably given by J.J. Little himself to them. But I might never know the answer to that. If you collect political items or Victorian bronze items this will be a great addition to your collection and a fun mystery to own.
