Gorgeous 1872 Grant & Wilson Wall Plaque Gorgeous 1872 Grant & Wilson Wall Plaque.
Gorgeous 1872 Grant & Wilson Wall Plaque. This is the companion piece to the 1868 Grant and Colfax version also offered in this sale (interestingly, the company does not seem to have made corresponding examples for the Seymour & Blair and Greeley & Brown Democratic tickets. These plaques are among the most elaborate, elegant, and expensively made pieces ever created specifically as campaign items.

Like the 1868 version, this one features smaller high-relief busts of Lincoln and George Washington at the top, each on a black background and surrounded by a brass frame. These and the larger ovals are set into a larger oval of plated brass (appears to be nickel), which is elaborately engraved with campaign slogans and patriotic motifs: "In God is our strength"; "First in war, first in peace, first in the hearts of our countrymen"; "Unanimously nominated at Philadelphia, June 6th, 1872"; "As we did in '68 so we will in '72"; "Cheers from our Army and Navy, Cheers from our Red, White, and Blue"; "General Grant has never been defeated and he never will be- Horace Greeley"; "Copyright Secured August 2nd 1872." The Greeley quote is a remark he made about Grant during the Civil War which came back to haunt him in the 1872 campaign!

Curved around the candidates' portraits are "For President... Ulysses S. Grant of Illinois" and "Vice President Henry Wilson of Massachusetts." The elaborate Victorian frame, with incised gold-leafed decoration, is as originally issued. Great condition (for strictest accuracy, we note that there has been some really inconsequential deterioration of the nickel plating of the background oval). One of the very best 3-D American political collectibles! 16" x 18".
