Goodsprings,NV - Clark County - February 13, 1909 - Underground Mine RPC :
2 miners in an underground tunnel with an air drill. The men are identified on the margin in period handwriting as: Foreman Joe Travis and Fred Hail. The writer goes on to describe the photo in this way: “Air drill set up, ready to run this is a hammer machine. I took this picture 250 feet from the surface or collar of the shaft.” The town was named after Joseph Good in 1886. Two different descriptions of Good note that he was a) a cattle rancher whose headquarters were in this area, and b) that he was one of a few prospectors from Nevada County, California who discovered silver there in 1861 and were responsible for the Colorado Mining District’s formation. Silver-lead discoveries in 1868 led to the townsite taking his name. Whichever is true—and perhaps they both are—the town was located 7 miles west of Jean (about 34 miles southwest of Las Vegas) and was important for milling the ore from the surrounding mines, which was then taken to the railhead in Jean for transport. The discovery of the Keystone gold mine in 1892 brought more than 200 people to the Goodsprings area and between then and 1952 the Yellow Pine mining district earned over $31 million from gold, lead and zinc. The town declined thereafter and today is a mere shadow of its former self. [Ref:robertwynn.com].
