Lengthy J.D. Salinger Typed Letter Signed with a Holograph Closing Good personal content T.L.S. "Jerry" and adding "Hope the Cape looked good to you" in his hand, 3 pp., 5.5" x 8.5", White River Junction, Vermont , Sep. 22, 1981, to a family friend hoping to make plans for a visit and giving parental advice. In part: "That's welcome and uplifting news that you're available for a dolphin-ride or a bunch of old movies one weekend pretty soon. Now to figure out, agree upon, which one. How lucky for you, lady, that Sarah's still young enough for you to have a very good general idea where you stand on coming weekends, but just wait till that missy is in college and on the town somewhere, or even more telephone-y and short-notice-y, in another State… ergo, ever due to blow in, to Arrive, you-never-know-when… Not that Matthew, who is as good and considerate a kid as ever there was, doesn't try to give me a little leeway. Just that his idea of a little leeway isn't always very much. He was up last weekend, and it was rather unusual, in that I'd been given plenty of time to stock the refrigerator with a young ox and a small gnu, for a twenty-one-year-old boy's and occasional weight-lifter's snacktimes…" His thoughts then turn to more philosophical questions regarding his profession as a writer: "…I'm confronted these days or year with just too damn many options, mostly professional - but in fact or in effect my professional coming and going tend to be or appear to be less and less separable from my personal 'al' is added in his hand and (as it were, like spiritual comings and goings, what passes for an interior life, mystical or dinky, as the crow flyeth. Fundamentally though, my options, not to say my whole mental, traffic system, are a peculiar writer's options. (Sic. A peculiar writer's, not a writer's peculiar.) And, surely - at least, surely in my mind - they only appear to be options… And, to say the obvious but the true, you pays for doing what you like to do and for being allowed to do it, and the price is perfectly fair, much considered…" Much more good content. With the original transmittal envelope, all in near fine condition. Salinger is one of the scarcest in autographs by modern literary figures, and a letter with content of internal musings is particularly desirable.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
