Rare vintage matte-finish 7 x 9 head-and-shoulders portrait of McDaniel as Mammy in Gone With the Wind, beautifully signed in fountain pen, “Best Wishes From Hattie McDaniel, G.W.T.W., 39.” Attractively cloth-matted and framed to an overall size of 12.75 x 14.5. In fine condition, with a small spot of discoloration to background. Exceptionally rare and highly desirable, this is just the fourth photo of McDaniel in her iconic role that we have ever offered—and the first signed in the year of the classic film’s release. Filming for Gone With the Wind finished on July 1, 1939, and post-production continued until November 11, before it premiered at the end of the year. In winning an Academy Award for her role as Mammy, McDaniel earned a place in Hollywood history as the first African-American performer to win an Oscar.
