Gone With The Wind Tara Curtains
Who doesn’t remember the infamous curtains or “portieres” that adorned the windows and doorways at Tara in the all time great American classic movie “Gone With The Wind” (1939)? They held special significance, since some of them were used by Scarlett (Vivien Leigh) to create her famous “Curtain Dress”. In one key scene, after the pillaging of Atlanta, Scarlett tells Mammy (Hattie McDaniel) “You’re going to make me a new dress”, then jerks down some of the curtains, pole and all and drapes the material over her shoulder and shouts: “I’m going to Atlanta and I’ve got to go looking like a queen!” These are some of these actual original velveteen cotton moss-green curtains used in the production. They come from the collection of Vera Johnson who worked at the Selznick Studios during the years that “Gone With The Wind” was being produced. They have been in the possession of her niece, Zaz Clark for the past fifty years. The material has faded in over 70 years, but the original color can still be seen on the reverse side, and in the overlapping seams.
