Disputes between Columbia and Goldfield over a ownership of water tank peaked tragically when on June 23, 1904 W.A. Marsh saw a suspicious man approach the water tank. Thinking it was someone wanting to cause harm to the tank, Marsh grabbed a "stout stick" and followed him. When Marsh reached the tank he couldn't find the man and he peeped over the tank's six foot walls where "He was horrified to see the struggling form at the bottom, weighted down with a large rock attached to his neck with bailing wire" [Davis, History of Nevada, 1913, p. 875]. Residents of nearby Columbia became increasingly frustrated when the water had to be shut off to retrieve the body. This was the second death in Esmeralda County. The first was a death by gunshot.
