Goldfield,NV - Esmeralda County - c1910 - Gambling in Goldfield, Nevada (Print) :
This black and white print measures 9 x 13”. Four tables are clearly visible, along with a variety of wide and narrow stools and chairs in addition to bare walls and a crude looking floor. There are 8 men pictured in the parlor. While gambling was very popular at this time in Goldfield; saloons closest to the the mines, such as Carl Fuetsch’s California Beer Hall, did not offer any gambling as miners were more likely to drink than gamble before heading home. On the other hand, many parlors and saloons in town did offer gambling, with the sound of dice and roulette wheels being commonplace. The two men sitting at the table on the far right are playing poker, while the men at the middle and far tables are playing the popular game Faro. Faro, poker, blackjack, and keno were some of the most popular games from this time period. Faro is virtually extinct today due to the fact the odds were overwhelmingly in favor of the players rather than the house. This print is double matted under glass in a four piece frame that is in fair condition. Although there is a diagonal tear running through the middle of the print which has been repaired, it creates minimal visual distress and detracts little from the details of the piece.
