Goldfield,NV - Esmeralda County - c1903 - Florence Mine and Loading Ore Photograph :
Fantastic view of men loading ore onto wagons before the Florence site was heavily mined. Photograph measures 7”x5”, no matte, medium contrast—affected by some yellowing, and focus is good. There are a few small black spots on the photograph and the lower right portion of the image is blackened. Photographer not identified, but the photo is consistent with the work of A. Allen from Goldfield. In this photograph are numerous stacks of ore and several men are loading ore onto the wagons. Written on the photograph is “No. 19, FLORENCE MINE.” The Florence Mine was located by Charlie Taylor in May of 1903 and would soon become the biggest producer of Taylor’s many discoveries. To Taylor’s misfortune, he did not retain the Florence Mine Walcott’s USGS publication reported, “The largest producer at Goldfield in 1905 was the Florence Goldfield Mining Company” (Mineral Resources of the United States, 1906).
