TLS in Hebrew, one carbon page, 8.5 x 5.5, Histadrut Executive Committee letterhead, November 6, 1934. Letter to Comrade Isserson. In part (translated): “For a long time now the Histadrut has been pondering the question of guiding visitors and tourists to the country. We all know that many people come to the country and upon their arrival see themselves as close to us, and they leave the country disappointed only because of our lack of attention…To fix this problem, the Histadrut’s Executive Committee has decided to open an office attached to the Department for Overseas Affairs, to fill this role…[we have] decided to call a meeting of some people from the Labor settlement movement and the representatives of the Kibbutzim.” Creases and rusty paperclip marks to lower left, otherwise fine condition. Meir’s letter reflects on the Fifth Aliyah, the mass immigration to Palestine from Europe and Asia during the 1930s. With Hitler’s rise to power in Germany in 1933, the increased persecution of Jews drove many to immigrate to the region.
