-While “Gold Rush” may make many people think of gold pans, sluice boxes, and other methods of using water to separate rock from gold, water was unavailable in many mining claims. To separate material without water, tools such as this Dry Washer and Sifting Pan were often used. A pail of rocks and dirt would be poured onto the top screen. Large rocks would sit atop the screen, and smaller material would pass through into the reservoir. The reservoir would be shaken, and the fine matter would fall through a slot into the riffled canvas tray. The crank arm with the rubber belt would be turned, thereby pumping air through the bellows at the bottom of the stand. The force of the air moving through the canvas material would blow away the lighter grit and leave behind the gold. 1) This green painted wooden dry washer is 34.5” tall, 24” long, and 13” wide. The bellows still work very well, the canvas is in great condition, and there is no apparent serious damage to the wood. A fine example of a fully functioning dry washer. 2) The sifting pan is about 16" across the mouth, and constructed of sheet metal riveted down to 0.5" hardware cloth mesh for sifting. The pan is rusty, but in solid working order. HKA#64911
