High-grade gold-silver ore from the Kindergarten Mine near Seven Troughs, Pershing County, Nevada, approx 20 x 20 mm. Silvery-gray mineralization in amorphous quartz. Original collector determined it contained cerargyrite, a.k.a. chlorargyrite -- a silver chloride mineral that forms as silver deposits are oxidized. This can be seen as a reddish-brown scum on the silvery-gray sulfide mineralization on one end of this specimen. Seven Troughs is now a ghost town in Pershing County, not far from the town of Lovelock. It was named for the seven water troughs that were built in 1894 by a shepherder named Frank Ward. The town sprang up quickly, reaching about 300 full-time residents, and died just as quickly. The Kindergarten Mill, the first processing facility in the area, was built in 1907-08. By 1920 the town's post office had closed. Today some mill foundations remain, but little else is left. State: Nevada City: Silver Troughs Date:
