This was a three year railroad the used wooden rails, wheels, and horse power very likely used by 49ers on their way to California. The Independence and Missouri River Rail Road was the first chartered railroad in Missouri was the Independence & Missouri River Railroad on which construction began in 1848. The track was made of steel-faced wooden timbers laid lengthwise, just as iron rails were later used. The wheels of the cars were also made of wood. The railroad was nearly complete by the time the Missouri General Assembly approved the act on February 22, 1849, creating the “Independence and Missouri River Rail Road Company.” This animal-powered railroad extended from downtown Independence to Robert Hickman’s Landing in what was Wayne City, now a part of Independence, and ran until 1852. [Cedar Rapids Historical Society] This IOU is dated nearly one year before the rail road was actually approved. For $25 from (?) O. Boggs to the directors (Jones, Parker, Woodson, Buchanan, Hay, Modie & Courtney) on March 24, 1848. Notice the spelling of 'Missouri!'
