This is an important Gold Rush contract between the California Street Wharf Company and the City of San Francisco. The wharf would be built out in the bay to accommodate unloading miners on their way to the gold fields and the supplies that they would need on their journey. James King of William is one of the signers on the document. A prominent man in the early days of that city, he was shot and killed only a few years later in 1856, in broad daylight on a public street. A two-sided single sheet of blue paper, 8" x 12.5". While the document says "copy" at the top of the front page, it appears to contain a handwritten paragraph at the bottom of the second page signed by JKW himself, and the signature appears consistant with his other JKW signatures on file. He used both "Jas" and "James". -58820
