Lengthy 18pp. letter by Samuel Upham, Gold Rush prospector and newspaper pioneer. Letter dated 6 May 1878 to a Lieut. F.K. Upham reads in small part, ''…January, 1849 I sailed for California, via Cape Horn, and arrived in the modern El Dorado…after a tedious passage of 201 days...I sold my interest in the Transcript for $10,000…I started in Philad the Sunday Mercury…'' 8pp. of letter devoted to his uncle Senator William Upham of Vermont. Includes F.K. Upham's 5pp. reply to this letter. Measures 7.75” x 9.75'' in very good condition.
