Gold Reef,NV - Nye County - October 11, 1908 - Storefront Photograph :
First store of a short-lived mining town. Photograph measures 8”x6”, no matte, high contrast, and the focus is sharp. Corners have some wear. The lower right corner is creased. Otherwise, a very clean photo. Photographer is identified as E.W. Smith. Gold Reef, located six miles southeast of Tonopah, was the site of a gold strike in the summer of 1908. By October of the same year the camp was established with a store, café, and saloon (seen in photo). Thirteen men and one woman pose in this photo expressing their high hopes. Two men are holding up specimens, clearly in celebration of their potential good fortune. Many mining camps shared the fate of Gold Reef. Miners flocked in but the riches never materialized. Gold Reef did not even last a year. No. 5.
