Gold Mohur, 11.54g, struck at the Bombay Mint, (circa 1801-1802), in the name of Shah Alam II, RY 4(6), date 1802 incused inverted on an oval tablet, Privy mark 3, and a crowned leopard head on rev., (mohur unlisted in Pridmore, for Panchia of this variety see Prid 260). About Extremely Fine, Extremely Rare, only the third known specimen. A crowned leopard head was a Hallmark used in London and elsewhere from 1478 to 1821 AD. It denoted gold of the fineness of 22 carats, which was further increased to 94 touch by a government order in 1802 AD. Pridmore recorded Privy mark 3 only on the gold panchia (1/3 mohur). The second known specimen was sold by Wilkes and Curtis, which sold for £13,000 plus buyer’s premium. This specimen is one of the earliest mohurs struck at the Bombay mint in this series which is distinguished only by its Privy mark.
