This fine, California leaf gold specimen was previously in the mineral collection of F. John Barlow (Specimen #G-157). Barlow was passionate about collecting native gold specimens and traveled the world to secure superb specimens for his collection. He is acknowledged as one of America's most prominent private mineral collectors during the 1970's until the early 2000's. Barlow founded and operated AZCO Inc., a major piping contractor, specializing in industrial and power plant (including nuclear) construction and pipe fabrication. He assembled one of the best and largest privately held mineral collections in the world, over 5,000 high-quality specimens. Barlow won many awards in the field of mineral collecting, including the Ed McDole Memorial Trophy in 1975 and 1978, the Walt Lidstrom Memorial Award in 1993, the Paul Desautels Award in 1993, and the highest honor, the Carnegie Mineralogical Award in 2000.
