Gold Hunter Cigar Label by George Schlegel of New York. A lithographed and embossed 9.75" x 5.75" inner label showing "The Independent Gold Hunter on His Way to Klondike" walking on the railroad tracks from his home in Philadelphia. He is equipped with the shovel, pan, scales, tools, and provisions that he knows he will need. A road sign marked "The Horse Shoe Bend" gives the mileage to various locales such as "To Philadelphia 242" and "To Klondike 4295." The slogan "I Neither Borrow Nor Lend" is printed below the image. The Klondike Gold Rush (or stampede) took place in 1897-98 after a rich placer gold deposit was found in Bonanza Creek in the Yukon Territory of Canada (just east of Alaska) in 1896. News reached the United States and thousands of "wannabe" gold miners took off north to Alaska to make their fortune. This label likely dates from that very period. Excellent condition with only very light foxing. This label is listed as one of the "InStone 100" blue chip cigar labels.

Shipping: Small Flat (view shipping information)
