Gold Hill,NV - Storey County - c1870 - Miner's Union Hall at Gold Hill Photograph :
Rare view stereograph of Miner’s Union Hall in Gold Hill. Photograph measures 6”x3”, light pink single matte 6 7/8”x3 3/8”, medium contrast, and focus is good. Minor stains are on the matte and the matte has been hole-punched four times. Stereograph by J.C. Scripture Publishers when John Calvin Scripture worked in the town of Big Trees. Men and boys pose for a photograph in front of Union Hall. Miners’ Union Hall was located on Main Street right next to the Virginia and Truckee Railroad tracks. Unions came to Virginia City in 1863 and in 1866 the Miner’s Union of Gold Hill was organized. The Unions were instrumental in a wide range of workers' rights from establishing improved working conditions to keeping the Chinese out of the mines. Dues were $2.00 per month and used to aid miners’ and their families in times of death, sickness, and injury. Miners’ halls, such as the ones in Virginia City and Gold Hill, served as communal and recreational places for the miners. This stereograph is a rare view of the now vacant lot at Gold Hill.
