Gold Hill,NV - Storey County - c1865 - Quartz Mills Stereoview Card :
A rare view of several quartz mills at Gold Hill. Stereocard, 3 x 3", mounted on heavy yellow cardstock. Crisp and sharp focus with high contrast on both images, but slightly better contrast on the left than on right. Some foxing and several small spots on both images with one stain noted at top of right image, otherwise very fine. "Nevada." printed along left border, "738. Quartz Mills at Gold Hill," printed on lower right border. "Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1865, by Lawrence & Houseworth, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the United States, for the Northern District of California." printed along the right border. Very similar in image content to Houseworth #739. "Photographed and Published By Lawrence & Houseworth, Opticians, Importers of Stereoscopic Goods, etc., etc. 317 & 319 Montgomery St., San Francisco," is printed on the reverse, inside an ornate black border. A three cent revenue stamp is also affixed upside down on the middle right of the reverse. "#60, Geo. Lyman" and several other letters and numbers written in pencil on reverse, likely after the card was sold. Thomas Houseworth, photographer. The camp began out of discoveries made near the upper end of Gold Canyon in 1859, and by the end of 1859 Gold Hill nearly equaled its rival, Virginia City. From 1860-64 the town expanded due to its location at the lower end of the Comstock Lode. The city was quiet after 1864, with construction increasing after completion of the V & T R.R. created an increase in mining activity. The lower portion of the Comstock included ore from the Crown Point, Belcher, Yellow Jacket, and Imperial mines. By 1873 Gold Hill was an updated western city, but by 1878 production slowed and Gold Hill declined. (Ref: NV Ghost Towns & Mining Camps, Paher)
