Lot of two. 1) Issued Sept. 5, 1866 to the Ophir Co. For $375. One orange 2 cent manuscript cancelled revenue stamp at left. Signed from the Summit Mill Co. (mill to mill) that was built just two years prior on Oct. 8, 1864. Stamps and machinery was run by sixty horsepower engine that crushed on average 25 tons daily. Summit Mill was owned by Mason, Cashiviler, and O.S. Carrell. The mine was shut down in 1870 at its location on the northwest part of Virginia City. Drawn on bank of California. Includes tipped in color photograph at left of Victorian style home (c.1984). 2) No. 316 issued Oct. 2, 1866 to James Hamley for $146.70. Signed P. S. Buckminster (of the Imperial Mine). Three smaller mines were incorporated into the Imperial which paid dividends on moderate grade ore until 1868. Drawn on Bank of California.
