Sandy Bowers met Eilley Gowan (who became his wife) while the two waited tables in Gold Hill. Gold Hill miners made good fun with one another by enticing the two to marry. The miners gave the couple a million dollars worth of stock certificates as a joke (the certificates were so worthless, the miners papered their homes with them.) Not too much later, ore was struck in Gold Hill. Bowers sold off the previously worthless stock and made millions overnight. After making their millions, one night, Sandy Bowers' lavished the town with free drinks at area saloons. In 1863, the two built a glamorous mansion in Washoe Valley where, nightly, they hosted large parties with a private band. In three year's time, Sandy and Eilley blew through the cash and soon became poverty stricken, having only a few friends left. After Sandy Bowers died in 1868, Eilley made a living telling fortunes, becoming known as "The Washoe Seeress" [REF: Davis, The History of Nevada, 2009].
