Goepfert Freimann, Alfred Martin & Pedro de la Puente. MEDALLAS DEL PERU. LA EVOLUCION DE LA MONEDA PERUANA EN SU CONTEXTO HISTORICO. Banco Central de Reserva del Peru, Lima. 2015. 4to. 305, (3) pages. Original oversized pictorial card covers. Color painting, print, historical and medal photos throughout. Spanish text. Fine. This book on the Republican Medals of Peru is the first publication of this type published on this important topic. Its value is not only in showing the beauty of each metal piece itself, but also in the fact that each one tells us about part of Peru's history. These medals help to bring fundamental events from the past to life and help one to appreciate what the personalities and events that figure in the design of each medal mean. The issuance of medals is deeply linked to the history of the National Mint. For this reason, the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) decided to publish this book in 2015 to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the creation of the Lima mint. The first medal that appears in the publication is that of the 'Independence Oath', which was the one that the liberator San Martin delivered to notable neighbors and personalities faithful to the emancipatory cause. The book shows medals of extraordinary rarity such as the Bolivar oval, engraved in gold in 1824, by the artist Miguel Villavicencio; the one alluding to the capture of Callao by the patriots, after General Rodil surrendered and withdrew from the Real Felipe Fortress; that of the ladies of Lima to the Foreign Urban Guard, in 1881, in gratitude for their help after the Battle of Miraflores and of which only 13 pieces were minted in silver; or that of 1879, which appears on the title page of this book, and which the ladies of Lima gave don Miguel Grau while they were alive, melting part of its jewels, in recognition of its value after the monitor Huascar sank the frigate Esmeralda, during the Pacific War. Reading the legends and observing the images of the medals shows this work, allows us to have a broad panorama of the history of Peru, with all its vicissitudes and ups and downs; value the great compilation work carried out in this field and obtain complementary information for academic research on topics that are not only numismatic but also historical, economic and social. Lot weight: 2 lbs 5oz. Subject(s): Peruvian Medals.
