One quart milk bottle with front embossing. Bottom bears the maker’s mark “DeLaval.” Clear glass, with several small bubbles and minimal staining. Albert W. Goble, who moved to Wells in 1888, bought the former Hamill-Meigs store and renamed it “A.W. Goble General Merchandise.” The store was one of several family-owned businesses on Front Street, and was later managed by Goble’s son, A.W. Goble Jr. President Grover Cleveland named fellow Democrat A.W. Goble Sr. the Wells Postmaster, a position he held until William McKinley was elected President four years later. In 1910, A.W. Goble Jr. started his own cattle business, operating the Goble Dairy on land that included, in part, the wetland meadows called the Humboldt Wells. After A.W. Goble Jr. passed away in 1968, the Wells Progress editor recalled, ‘as a youth, I can well remember how Mr. Goble used to haul all of us kids around in his milk truck while he was making deliveries. He was always willing to let the kids come down to his ranch in the winter months and go ice skating in his fields’ [Ref: Old Town Front Street Walking Tour, The Wells Chamber of Commerce, undated]. This bottle is considered rare, with fewer than five specimens known [Ref: Nevada History Through Glass, Vol 1, Fred Holabird, 2012, p. 266]. - Ferraro Collection -59386
