Glenn Gould Collection. (12 Items) Glenn Gould Collection.
Glenn Gould Collection. This lot presents twelve items from the life and hand of Glenn Gould. Gould was known for his fantastic piano talents as much as he was known for his idiosyncrasies. In some cases he was called, "The Genius who doesn't want to play." Gould was known to crouch over the piano, so much so that it appeared he often played with his nose. He would sing loudly and thump his feet on the pedals; this made recording Gould a difficult challenge. However, despite these traits, which many considered unconventional, Gould was one of the most talented virtuosos the 20th century. This lot contains two typed letters signed; two autograph letters signed; four black and white photographs of Gould; three negatives of the photographs; and one copy of a magazine article on Gould. One ALS, signed in pencil as "Glenn," reads in part, "…I am writing now…in hope that my sad story will add just the right touch of bitters to your idyll in the sun and will force you to contemplate however briefly those whom life has seen fit to serve her as Naturkinder. Perhaps in the quiet shadow of some beechnut soothed by the lapping of the surf, you will spend a moment reflecting on those of us who are chosen to run against the tide…" His melancholy tone and prosaic nature are all common of Gould; his soul was constantly in torment absorbed by the topics of his health, his music, and his hands. From the pictures available of Gould, those that capture him playing the piano seem to be the only moments in his life where he was in a state of contentment, some might even say ecstasy.

The items in this lot are in very fine condition on average; the letters contain the usual folds; some letters begin in pen and end in pencil. The photographs are near pristine.
