Small Glass Vessel
7”H x 4” Diameter
This work appeared in the River of Destiny – the only work in glass to appear in the book. Having turned and textured the wood form, it was the first exploration of casting the work in glass that was successful. The deadline for the book, which was published in connection with an exhibition at the Long Beach Museum of Art, was fast approaching. Kevin Wallace was finishing up the text and most of the images had been sent to the designer. Yet Binh felt that transforming his delicate pierced work to glass could truly share the fragility of our life. As he set out exploring the process, many glass makers told him that it was impossible to cast his work in glass… and the more he heard this, the more determined he was to make this dream possible. The dragonfly is the main symbol in River of Destiny. Children in Vietnam compared the military machines to dragonflies – which are also a sign of good fortune. “My first piece in glass is filled with dragonfly imagery, in memory of looking up the sky at dawn at the American Embassy, during the Fall of Saigon, and watching those dragonflies disappear in to thin air.”
