Outstanding and scarce AMQS, signed “G. Verdi,” two measures from his opera Falstaff (including sung text) on an off-white 8 x 5.25 album page, dated Milan, February 1900. Verdi’s text reads, “Tutto nel monde e burla.” The reverse bears a lengthy inscription in Italian in an unknown hand. In fine condition, with some very subtle scattered soiling and two small pieces of old tape on the reverse showing through lightly near top edge. The third Verdi opera to be based on a Shakespearean play, Falstaff has long been a favorite of both critics and musicians because of its brilliant orchestration, scintillating libretto, and refined melodic invention. The work, featuring the above final chorus (translating to ‘The whole world is a joke’) is in the standard repertoire of many opera companies. Historically, the plays of Shakespeare have been particularly difficult to translate into opera, with only about a half-dozen ever becoming part of the standard repertory. Remarkably, Verdi wrote three of those—Macbeth, Otello, and Falstaff—a phenomenal fact that validates his genius. A highly desirable piece of music history.
