Italian composer (1813–1901) was one of the most influential figures in the history of opera. Wonderful 6.75 x 9.75 three-quarter length oversized cabinet portrait of Verdi by Pietro Tempestini, signed in black ink, “Al Napoleone di Montecatini i Melani. G. Verdi, 20 Juglio 1900.” In very good condition, with trimmed left edge, scattered light streaking and spotting to the image, and some scattered light skipping to signature and sentiment, all still completely legible.

The composer was in the twilight of his life when he graced this image with his signature. Several years had passed since his completion of the great opera, ‘Falstaff,’ and the assassination of Italy’s King Humbert in July 1900—barely a week after the date on this photo—is said to have taken an emotional and physical toll on Verdi, who suffered a stroke the following year that contributed to his death.
