Italian composer (1813–1901) who was one of the most influential figures in the history of opera. Scarce original sepia 4.5 x 6.5 cabinet bust portrait of Verdi in an overcoat and suit, labeled at the top, “Bruckmann’s Collection,” and signed in the lower border in black ink, “G. Verdi 1896,” with another notation in Verdi’s hand in the lower left. In very good to fine condition, with crease to right side, light overall spotting to image, mild toning from previous display, lightly trimmed lower edge, and mounting remnants to reverse. The following year after signing this portrait, Verdi completed his last composition, a setting of the traditional Latin text Stabat Mater.
