The painting depicts the interior of a palace with various mundane scenes from the life of 18th century Lucca nobility. The head of the family in the left foreground is surrounded by his spouse and children, the music instructor and two clergymen, the latter two presumably portraits of members of the Mansi family. Small groups dispersed around the salon are shown in the course of various activities typical of a Lucchese palace. The salon's size, its splendid Baroque appointments, and the view of the garden convey a sense of wealth and elegance. The influence of Watteau and Lancret, etchings of whose works had become known in Lombardy, is evident in the figures' garments. The palette also reflects Lombardi's familiarity with the paintings of Giuseppe Maria Crespi, while different scenes evoke the work of the Venetian genre painter Pietro Longhi. Prof. Dr. Franco Moro has confirmed the authenticity of this Lombardi painting and intends to address the work in a future publication.
