This gilt bronze figure of a Bodhisattva Mañjusri was crafted in Tibet during the 20th century. The deity is sitting in padmasana on a semi peripheral lotus throne. The finely worked soles are visibly and decorated with a diamond pattern. The floral chased garment covers the legs and the base. The ribbons of his garment swirl around his hips. The lotus flower to his left is crowned by a book and Mañjusri is holding the lotus stalk between his thumb and index finger. The vitarka mudra, the gesture of knowledge, is formed with his left hand. The bodhisattva is holding a long sword in his raised right hand. The sword represents transcendent wisdom, cutting down ignorance and duality. The attributes sword and book are symbols of wisdom.

Bodhisattva Mañjusri has a meditative and peaceful expression (santa) on his face. Finely chased jewellery with small deposits of turquoise are visible on his body and a five-leaf crown, the symbol of the five elements, adorns his head. A high topknot behind the crown is very precisely executed and strands of his hair falling over each of the bodhisattva’s shoulders. The fire-gilt figure is sealed by a copper base plate with double vajra symbol.

The bronze figure is in good condition with natural patina and common traces of wear, such as small notches, gold abrasion and minimal loss of material around his hips. The figure measures 20.5 cm in height, 15.5 cm in width and 9 cm in depth.
