This is an original “Roar with Gilmore” Gilmore Oil Company Wayne Model 70 Gasoline Pump dating to circa 1937-1946. The gas pump shows all original condition with the original reverse painted “GILMORE” glass on both sides, the original very scarce white and yellow coloring and the double sided “Roar with Gilmore” red/yellow/black lion and checkered flag globe. The pump shows the original Wayne front tags and The Wayne Pump Company side tag which states this pump as being; Cut: 70, Serial No. 193297-BDL, Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. No. A-455248. Gilmore Oil Company was founded by Arthur Fremont Gilmore after he struck oil on his dairy farm outside of Los Angeles, California in 1903. His son, Earl Bell Gilmore, took over the operation and at its peak Gilmore Gasoline had over 3,000 gas stations on the West Coast. Their mascot was Gilmore the Flying Lion (1930-1950) who flew with aviator Colonel Roscoe Turner. In the 1940’s the company was purchased by Socony-Vacuum Oil Company which later became Mobil (now ExxonMobil). The gas pump shows an all original condition, a rare attribute, with a nearly pristine complete internals. These original Gilmore Gas Pump’s are exceedingly rare with authentic originals such as this selling for $28,000 at RM Auctions 2012 sale, $9,500 at Dan Morphy Auctions 2017 sale, and nearly identical examples (but not in the rare white and yellow) for $6,000 at RM Auctions 2007 sale and $5,000 in the same sale.
