This is a beautiful document of the close and long-lasting friendship between Picasso and Brassaï, whose portraits of Picasso fetch more than 20,000 Euro on the international auction market

The image was taken by Gilberte, the wife of the French photographer Brassaï, who was born as Gyula Halász in Hungary. The photograph shows Brassaï and Picasso in summer 1966 in the village of Notre-Dame-de-Vie in Mougins, South of France, where Picasso lived since 1961. The gelatin silver print on barite paper is dedicated to ‘Bill et Mary’ and is signed by Brassaï and Gilberte.
The photograph is in very good condition with only slight signs of usages on the edges and traces of previous mounting on the back. The image is signed on the front with ‘Gilberte’ and ‘Brassaï’, dated ‘1973’ and dedicated ‘Pour Bill et Mary bien cordialement’. En verso it is marked with the copyright wet stamp of Brassaï’ and the inscription ‘photographie de Gilberte, Pic. 392 A’ as well as the date ‘le 8 juillet 1973, Notre-Dame-de-Vie Mougins’. The sheet size is 23.8 x 30 cm.
Brassaï (1899-1984)
Brassaï was born under the name Gyula Halász and his pseudonym name can be translated with ‘from Brassó’. In 1933 he published the photograph book ‘Paris de Nuit’ depicting the Parisian nightlife, which made him internationally famous very quickly. Brassaï did not only work in the field of photography, he also worked in drawing, painting, sculpting and writing.
