Gilbert Shelton - "Wonder Wart-Hog Meets Super Patriot" Page Original Art (1962). Underground Comix great Gilbert Shelton began his career by contributing comic strips to his college paper, University of Texas' Texas Ranger, back in 1961. His savagely funny parody of superheroes, "Wonder Wart-Hog," was a big hit with the college crowd, and before long, Shelton's fang-toothed crime fighter was appearing in Help! and Cycle Toons magazines. This is the last page from a story originally found in Texas Ranger; it was later reprinted in the 1967 Fawcett Gold Medal paperback book Wonder Wart-Hog, Captain Crud and Other Super Stuff, a collection of college comic strips that also included the work of Vaughan Bode, and helped usher in the Age of the Undergrounds. The red notations in the margins were for the Captain Crud book, which broke the story up into two-panel pages (this piece made up pages 28, 29, and 30). The art is in pen-and-ink on sketchpad paper, and is in Very Good condition with some minor soiling and small tears, none of which adversely affect the image area; a small paste-up over Shelton's original signature has since dropped off. A rare classic!
