Gilbert Shelton - Grateful Dead Shakedown Street Serigr
Gilbert Shelton - Grateful Dead Shakedown Street Serigraph Print, 150/170 (Alain Toupin, 2003). Hey, you Deadheads, don't miss this wild print! It's from Gilbert Sheldon's cover to the Grateful Dead's 1978 Arista album, showing a somewhat freakish (as in Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers) street scene, complete with cruising cars and cycles, winos and hookers, busting cops and boogie-loving babes! The art was slightly reworked and enhanced by Shelton, resulting in a design that reflected the pastel beauty of the San Francisco Bay area and architecture. This is a hand made 18-color serigraph on Arches paper, signed and numbered by Shelton, with an image size of 16" x 16", and an overall paper size of 20" x 20". This print is the first and only fine art print of this image, and would make a great companion to Robert Crumb's "The Klezmorim: Streets of Gold" offered elsewhere in this sale, which is also numbered 150. Robert and Gilbert were both regular contributors to Zap Comix, and are both now living in France. Shelton has done only two other album covers so far in his career; for bluesman Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and the late, great Doug Sahm (Sir Douglas Quintet). Truck on down and bid, brother! From the collection of Barry Silbergeld of Art & Love of Music.

Shipping: Large Flat (view shipping information)
