Gilbert Brewing Virginia City Montana Ephemera
In this lot is offered this collection of Montana Territory ephemera from Gilbert Brewing Company of Virginia City, Montana. Montana Territory’s oldest brewery, founded in 1866, is today a rare example of once-common small town breweries. Though several additions to the 1860s building expanded the booming business, its current exterior appearance remains unchanged from the 1880s. Proprietor Henry Gilbert’s home and the century-old willows of his “beer garden” park enhance the landscape. The brewery was closed by Prohibition in 1919 and Gilbert Beer, proclaimed by connoisseurs among the nation’s best, was made no longer. Henry Gilbert was also active in the life of Virginia City, serving as the mayor for two terms as well as the Madison County treasurer. Items in this ephemera collection include a business license for Virginia City dated September 1910, a receipt for dues paid to the Montana Brewers and Wholesalers Association dated February 1916, a cancelled check paid to the Virginia City Water Company dated June 1915, a bottle label for Gilbert Brewing Co. Lager Beer, and lastly a mining claim deed dated 1881. All the items are in good overall condition, foxing is noted thoughout though no other obvious damage noted. Measurement of items together is 5"W x 8.75"L approximately
