Gil Kane and John Romita - Original Cover Art for Marvel Team Up #1 (Marvel, 1972). In the '60s, Marvel perfected the super-hero crossover. In the '70s, Marvel took things a step further and created a comic book solely devoted to the crossover. This, the all important first issue, begins with the classic teaming of Spider-Man and The Human Torch and pits the argumentative team against The Sandman, a favorite foe of both characters. Spider-Man would go on to co-star in almost all 150 issues before Team-Up ended its historic run. Artistically speaking, you couldn't ask for a better teaming on a first Spider-Man issue than Kane and Romita. Both creators are considered to be definitive Spider-Man artists. The composition, a worm's eye view looking up at the main characters in action, depicting the eminent defeat of our heroes, is in typical Kane fashion, particularly striking. The image area measures "10 x 15", pen and ink on board. The cover has a few condition issues. The Spider-Man figure and the entire art image has been moved and is a pasted onto the art board but its all original art. There is also a fair amount of white-out present on the entire length, top to bottom, of the water tower. Still, a fabulous looking key Silver Age cover.
