Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War under Lincoln and Johnson (1802–1878). Civil War–dated partly-printed DS, signed “G. Welles,” one page, 8 x 10, April 7, 1865. Navy Department document in which Welles informs Lieutenant Commander John Grimes Walker that he is "detached from the command of the Shawmut," and that he is to regard himself as awaiting orders. Signed on the reverse as forwarded by Commandant Hiram Paulding. In fine condition, with a blue pencil notation to the lower border. A highly desirable document from two days before General Lee's surrender at Appomattox.
