Secretary of the Navy under Lincoln and Johnson (1802–1878). War-dated manuscript telegram, one lightly-lined page, 7.75 x 9.75, April 11, 1864. Telegram to Rear Admiral Hiram Paulding reads, in full: “Let the Onondaga go without waiting for the Tecumseh.” Signed at the conclusion by Welles. Bottom bears a received notation and stamp. In fine condition, with some light edge wear and toning and tack hole to top left.
