<B>Gideon Welles: A War-Date Letter Signed and a Post-War Autograph Letter.</B></I> Two for the price of one, but both as Secretary of the Navy, as follows: 1) Letter Signed, as Lincoln's Secretary of the Navy, 8" by 10", on Navy Department letterhead, Washington, June 22, 1864; to Naval Paymaster General George L. David at the strategically positioned Cairo, Illinois Navy Yard. Bearing a stamp on the verso of the integral 4th leaf, "<I>Respectfully forwarded David D. Porter Rear Admiral</B></I>" below which appears a handwritten date, "June 22, 1864." In very fine condition, albeit with a few pencil dealer notations at bottom right corner. With typed transcription. In full: "<I>Your letter of the 15th instant has been received. Your clerk will be allowed his actual necessary travelling expenses from Brooklyn, N.Y. [home to another Navy Yard] to Cairo</B></I>." 2) Autograph Letter Signed, as Johnson's Secretary of the Navy, 1 page, 5" by 8" inches, Hartford, February 26, 1876. To the New York publisher firm of Sheldon & Co. In fine condition, albeit a barely visible internal tear has been repaired on verso, and there are mounting traces on verso as well. With typed transcription. Here the ex-journalist and great diarist orders books: "...<I>The 'Memoirs of J.Q. Adams' are not yet complete, I believe, but I wish to get the volumes so far as published.
