ALS, three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 10, March 17, 1840. Handwritten letter to Orrin Holt, in part: "Buchanan's speech will be widely circulated in the state but to what extent, and whether it will effectually counteract Davis poison remains to be ascertained by events which are now not distant. The subject of labor and wages is always a delicate one to touch…Davis was base enough to play the demagogue…Whigs are fighting with the desperation of devils. I apprehend the most infamous frauds under the Registry law. I was one of a committee to call on the select-men in order to ascertain whether they had commenced making the Registry in this term—on what principles they made it—whether others than legal officers are employed &c &c…I trust you will make it a point to the state as soon as possible. Our men must be prepared for the worst, in towns where there are voting boards. Pennsylvania and New Jersey are to be outdone by Whigs in Connecticut." Hand addressed and franked on the integral leaf by Welles as Postmaster of Hartford. In fine condition, with a small area of seal-related paper loss to the integral address leaf.
