Gideon Welles Autograph Letter Signed "G. Welles, Sect. of the Navy." A 7.5" x 10", one page, handwritten letter, dated April 24, 1868, on Navy Department stationery. Gideon Welles was Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War; he was responsible for the naval blockade of the South, known as the Anaconda plan. While the blockade was never fully completed, its impact on the South's economy did contribute significantly to the North's ultimate victory. The letter we feature here reads in part, "In reply to your enquiry of the 21st you are informed that no edition of the Navy Regulations has been issued since 1865, but several supplementary circulars have been published, copies of which are herewith enclosed."

The letter is in fine condition; the ink is dark and crisp; usual folds are present; the letter is backed on another sheet of paper which has been torn out of a booklet, and the edges show signs of the tearing. Otherwise, excellent!
