This Gibson and Sons 19th century English copper lustreware pitcher winks at you! It was made by Gibson and Sons of Staffordshire, England, one of the best-known English copper lustreware producers since the 19th century. It measures 3 inches tall, 1 7/8 inches across the top, and has a 2-inch base. It is in excellent condition.

This piece is especially old, as it shows both the black crown mark and the newer gold mark of Gibson and Sons on the bottom. It also shows green artist marks.

Lustreware in general is iridescent and shiny, which is achieved by painting the glazed pottery with a mixture containing a precious metal dissolved in acid. A yellow surface indicates the presence of silver; ruby, gold: silver, platinum, and red or pinkish is the copper. Copper lustreware was the most common in the 19th century, of which this is a lovely example!
