Italian-American composer (1911–2007) best known for such popular operas as The Consul, The Saint of Bleecker Street, and Amahl and the Night Visitors. TLS signed "Ciao, Gian Carlo," two onionskin pages, 6 x 8.25, Pont-Royal-Hotel letterhead, February 9, 1967. Letter to Roy Newbert. In part: "I've gone over the screen treatment of 'The Saint' very carefully, and I'm afraid that I can't give it my approval yet. Although I find the sequence of scenes and the camera-angle plotting quite ingenious and full of exciting possibilities, I was sadly disappointed at the flatness of the dialogue: it seems to have lost its poetry without acquiring any compensatory realistic vitality. None of the characters really come alive for me-not because they have strayed too far from the original libretto, but rather, perhaps, for quite the opposite reason. The script writer appears to have been far too conscious of the original text when, after all, it was never meant to be spoken...'The Medium' goes on in Monte Carlo the nineteenth, and I expect to be in New York by the 23rd at the latest...(It goes without saying that I’m dropping you this note in compliance with the provisions of our contract to let you know formally that my approval of the script has not yet been granted)." In very fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
