Gettysburg Map 1863
"WINNERS WILL BE NOTIFIED AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS BY THE AUCTIONEER ONCE ALL BIDS HAVE BEEN PROCESSED TO DETERMINE THE WINNER FOR EACH LOT."
Sketched map of the Gettysburg 1-3 July 1863 battle, likely the first published map of the historic Civil War battle. Printed in 1863, map shows Gettysburg and its environs in a scaled oval, with green shaded areas denoting woods, and blue and red denoting Union and Confederate troop placement, respectively. Also shows the town and all principal roads, with an account of the movements of the respective armies previous to the battle, compiled by eyewitnesses. The chromolithographed ''Field of Gettysburg'' map, measuring 16.5'' x 20'', has been detached from a 24pp. book ''Exploratory Map of Gettysburg'' engraved by T. Diterrline. Originally published by C.A. Alvord: New York: 1863. Also includes a printed testimonial by George Childs, noted philanthropist and publisher of the influential ''Philadelphia Public Ledger'', dated 23 October 1863. Childs expresses his high opinion of the map, ''which is shared by several officers in the battle.'' On the last page of the pamphlet, the map's engraver, Ditterline, indicates his indebtedness, ''...to the several correspondents of the press who were present and witnessed the battles, and from whose descriptions of the fight he has freely extracted; as also to the citizens of the town...'' Framed map is in near fine condition.
